《New Adhesive For Bonding HDPE Sheets Instead of Welding》:
Finally an adhesive for bonding the ‘unbondable’. Glue HDPE sheet to HDPE sheets, HDPE to Polypropylene and even HDPE to UHMW sheet. High Density Polyethylene has been one of the most difficult plastics to glue. The ‘Ultimate Plastic Bonder’, Sci-Grip PPX5
(Newswire.net — June 13, 2014) Anaheim, CA — Some materials are very easy to bond together. Gluing paper to wood is very simple with Elmer’s glue. Other raw materials are extremely difficult. Materials that are designed to be ‘slippery’ or ‘non-stick’ are almost impossible to bond together.
HDPE Sheet Almost Impossible To Bond
High Density Polyethylene or HDPE is one of those difficult to bond materials. The HDPE was first invented back in 1951 by research chemists Paul Hogan and Robert Banks of Phillips Petroleum. The traditional method to attach two sheets together has been with a hot air welding system, and this only allows for bonding ‘like’ materials together.
HDPE is one of the most prevalent plastics in the market, used to make milk jugs, cutting boards, and many children’s toys. This inexpensive material can be extruded into common sheet, rod and tube shapes or molded into a complex shape.
The main downside regarding HDPE was the difficulty to bond this material with any known glue or adhesive. Even good epoxy cements ‘pop’ right off after they dry. The surface of good HDPE sheet feels a bit waxy, and thus nothing was available that could grab this surface effectively.
Low energy surface material like HDPE and Polypropylene are notoriously difficult to bond. The PPX5 product was specially developed to yield a tough and resilient bond to these materials, with no special pre-treatment. The finished adhesive is an off-white color after curing. The product comes in a 2 part tube cartridge, and uses a mixing tip to blend part A with part B during the dispensing process.
Sci-Grip PPX5 Bonds The UnBondable
Recently, Sci-Grip, a leader in bonding and adhesive products for plastics, released Sci-Grip PPX5 Methacrylate Adhesive. This product solves this 60 year old bonding problem. This incredible 2 part adhesive will bond HDPE to HDPE, along with many other difficult to bond plastics. Not only can you bond HDPE to itself, but also glue it to Polypropylene Sheet, LDPE sheet, UHMW Sheet and several others. The adhesion properties are impressive. Secure bonds cure in approximately 90 minutes, with a working time of about 2 – 4 minutes.
This product has a very low exotherm to limit any surface distortion. PPX5 is solvent free with no volatiles and a very low odor. The finished bond has good chemical resistance and excellent water/humidity resistance.
