Henkel’s Loctite TAF-8800 Awarded at productronica

《Henkel’s Loctite TAF-8800 Awarded at productronica》:

At last week’s productronica event in Munich, Germany, The Electronics Group of Henkel was presented with a Global Technology Award for its new thermal absorbent film material, Loctite TAF-8800. In the category of Adhesives/Encapsulants/Underfills, Loctite TAF-8800 was judged to be the most innovative electronics assembly industry product.

Loctite TAF-8800 is a thermal absorbent film that effectively absorbs, spreads, insulates, and dissipates IC-generated heat in handheld devices. Most often the cause of high skin (external housing) temperature, excessive heat from the device CPU can result in user discomfort. In addition, insufficient heat dissipation can limit advancing semiconductor designs as many chips are too hot for use with current products.

To address these issues, the company developed Loctite TAF-8800, which not only reduces CPU and skin temperature more effectively than alternatives, but also gives electronics specialists more design latitude. The new material slowly dissipates the thermal energy generated by ICs, which allows the device to maintain a lower skin temperature. In a recent evaluation, Loctite TAF-8800 lowered the CPU and skin temperature of a tablet device by more than 3°C (approximately 5°F) as compared to that of an alternative heat spreading material.

“Winning this award underscores the significance of our new material for the handheld sector,” says Jonathan Rowntree, vice president of Global Product Management. “The increasing densities of tablets and smartphones require novel solutions for heat management. Loctite TAF-8800 delivers effective thermal control, while also offering contourability not available in more brittle alternatives. We thank the judging panel for recognizing this distinction and are honored to have won this year’s Global Technology Award in such a competitive category.”

Loctite TAF-8800 can be customized in a range of film thicknesses and layer constructions to address specific application needs. Offering immense design freedom, the thermal absorbent film has multi-axis contourability which allows it to be positioned over and/or under components within exceptionally tight spaces.

“Effective thermal control is one of the most pressing design concerns for next-generation handhelds,” notes Rowntree in summary. “With this material, Henkel has already advanced well beyond conventional solutions. We are grateful to award organizer Global SMT & Packaging magazine for hosting this contest to showcase innovations such as Loctite TAF-8800.”
