《Dow Corning Foundation awards $165,000 in grants》：
The trustees of the Dow Corning Foundation approved nearly $165,000 in grants at their June meeting, including the following Great Lakes Bay Region projects:
• Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail – $100,000 toward the goal of connecting the region’s non-motorized trail systems,
• Thomas Township Parks and Recreation – $10,000 in matching funds for local parks,
• Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance Foundation – $25,000 for the completion of a regional STEM study,
• Delta College Foundation – $4,500 to support the Dow Delta Middle School Manufacturing Experience.
“Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor Group are pleased to support these important projects,” said Kathryn Curtiss Spence, foundation director. “Our long-term commitment to making our region a better place to live and work is evidenced by our investment in education and recreation.”
In addition, the Dow Corning Donor Advised Funds committee, a subcommittee of the Dow Corning Foundation, approved nearly $53,000 in local grants during its last meeting.
The Donor Advised Funds committee, which is comprised of Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor employees, directs a total of $300,000 in grants annually in the Great Lakes Bay Region through the Bay Area, Midland Area and Saginaw Community Foundations. The Dow Corning Foundation established these three Donor Advised Funds in 2010, and has invested more than $1 million into the Great Lakes Bay Region since inception.
The following non-profit organizations benefitted from funding in the second quarter:
• YWCA of the Great Lakes Bay Region – $6,000 for the expansion of its Economic Advancement Program into Saginaw,
• Pinconning Area School Athletics – $8,000 for a stadium lighting improvement project,
• Chippewa Nature Center – $8,000 toward the construction of a timber-framed barn,
• Pulse3 Foundation – $6,500 to provide free cardiac arrest training in the region’s schools,
• Bay City Players – $3,000 to provide funding for Stages of Discovery,
• Pinconning Arts Council – $5,500 toward the construction of a band shell,
• Kids Run The Nation – $8,000 for program expansion into rural Saginaw County,
• Midland Young Life – $8,000 for the recruitment and training of mentors.
The foundation’s mission is to improve scientific literacy by increasing access to math, science and technology education at the pre-university level, improve vitality and quality of life in communities where Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor employees work and reside, and to increase the utilization of sustainable, innovative technologies to benefit society. The Dow Corning Foundation gives more than $1 million annually.
